Stuttgart to Ingolstadt

We caught the train from Stuttgart on the Neckar River to Ulm on the banks of the Danube River. An hours journey to avoid some serious uphill pedalling - too old for that. Old town Ulm is steeped in history and boasts the tallest church steeple in the world ~162 mtrs (503 ft).

Seraching the lane ways of the old city for a suitable venue to watch Germany play the USA for a place in the quarter finals of the World Cup Soccer.

Our first view of the Danube at Ulm, we now follow the river downstream with the flow on its way to the Black Sea. The source of the Danube (called the Donau here) is in the Black Forest about 130 kms upstream from here. It is unusual in that once formed into a river it disappears under ground for miles with hardly enough surface water to float a kayak. Over half the water that disappears flows into the Rhine catchment and flows northward to the North Sea, the remainder remerges into the Danube catchment and flows eastward to the Black Sea.

Overtook the peloton and waiting for them to catch up.

Just following the river.

Rest stop in the forest.

Complimentary schnapps when ever Germany scored a goal and again when they won - unfortunately they only scored one goal against France to win so we were still sober when we left the venue. The town of Ingolstadt went crazy after the win and it was exciting to be amongst it all.
